Defence analysts say the drills also signal deeper military ties among some BRICS partners and raise questions about regional maritime politics. ‘The timing and partners change the political stakes,’ said Dean Wingrin, a defence analyst.
The Department of Defence stressed the move to reschedule was logistical and linked to the G20 calendar, and it said South Africa remains committed to multilateral military cooperation.
Local fishermen, port workers and shipping companies will watch the exercises closely. Navy officials say planned co-ordination will aim to limit disruption to commercial traffic and protect coastal communities.
