The Department of International Relations and Cooperation confirmed Pretoria refused Washington’s request to send a low-level envoy to the handover.
According to Reuters delegates noted the declaration as an achievement for the first African G20 presidency. President Ramaphosa praised the consensus among participating countries and underlined South Africa’s role in centring developing nations.
The handover protocol remains unclear. Diplomats say the presidency will pass to the United States in name.
The shape of the formal ceremony will depend on talks between the two governments in the coming hours.
