The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) has confirmed that a group of South African citizens, who were detained in Israel while participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), have safely arrived in Jordan.
This announcement comes as a significant relief after a tense period of uncertainty regarding their fate, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to Dirco, South Africa’s Ambassador to Jordan, Tselane Mokuena, was present to receive the activists, who were released following their interception by the Israeli navy in international waters as they approached Gaza.
The activists departed from Israel on Tuesday morning, with Dirco announcing their impending repatriation on the previous Monday.
The GSF, an initiative launched in June, aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip while raising awareness about the critical needs of the Palestinian people. The flotilla set off from Barcelona, Spain, in early September. However, its mission was cut short when over 470 individuals on board were detained by Israeli police.
Among those detained were notable South African figures, including Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, Zukiswa Wanner, Reaaz Moolla, Zaheera Soomar, Fatima Hendricks and Carrie Shelver.

Minister Ronald Lamola expressed gratitude to all parties involved in the activists’ return, both locally and internationally, recognising the collaborative effort that enabled their safe repatriation.
‘The South African government remains committed to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad,’ the department stated.
The GSF’s mission was not without its challenges. As the situation unfolded, the Israeli Foreign Ministry reported the deportation of 171 activists from various countries, including prominent figures like Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.
These activists, hailing from nations across Europe and the United States, were sent back to their respective countries illustrating the international dimension of the flotilla’s endeavour.
