A South African woman and a Brazilian man were arrested at Ngurah Rai International Airport for attempting to smuggle 4kg of narcotics into Bali.
At a press briefing, Made Sinar Subawa from the local anti-narcotics agency said the Brazilian suspect acted as a courier, carrying just over 3kg of cocaine hidden in his backpack and luggage. He was instructed to deliver the drugs to a contact on the island, AP News reported.
According to The South African, the woman arrived from Singapore the same day with nearly 1kg of crystal methamphetamine concealed in her clothing. She admitted she had been ordered to transport the meth from Johannesburg for delivery in Bali.
Indonesia enforces the death penalty for drug trafficking, with many offenders still on death row, including a British grandmother convicted of smuggling cocaine. The country last carried out executions in 2016, when one Indonesian and three Nigerian drug traffickers were executed by firing squad. Human rights groups have long criticised the practice.
Both suspects remain in custody as authorities investigate and work to dismantle the trafficking network.
