South Africa’s international reputation has taken a blow due to the recent taxi unrest in Cape Town, according to the local tourism body.

Cape Town Tourism says it is in the process of assessing the full extent of the damage to the sector. ‘The destination reputation has taken a bit of a knock. If you can see the travel advisory from the United States, United Kingdom and the Netherlands and the big concerns around this will always be the opportunity cost lost for any traveller for those markets or any other markets,’ says Enver Duminy, Cape Town Tourism CEO.
As per EWN, five people dies in violent protests linked to the strike, and buses, trucks, vehicles and other infrastructure were damaged.
Cape Town Tourism says many businesses were affected after international visitors cancelled their vacations. The organisation’s comments follow a week-long minibus taxi stayaway due to a dispute between the City of Cape Town and the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) over the impoundment of taxis.
