In a game-changing move aimed at enhancing service efficiency for South Africans living abroad, the Department of Home Affairs has announced the launch of a global courier service that will allow citizens to receive their passports delivered straight to their doors within 72 hours, reports Cape {town} Etc.
This new initiative, which is set to take effect on November 1, promises to revolutionise the way South Africans access crucial identity documents while residing outside their homeland.
The announcement was made by Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber during a recent event in The Hague, Netherlands, where a new dedicated service centre has been established to facilitate faster passport applications. Previously, the waiting time for passport processing could stretch up to 18 months.

With the introduction of this new service, South Africans can now expect a turnaround time of just five weeks.
‘This marks the first time ever that Home Affairs has provided clients with the option to select courier delivery for a critical enabling document,’ Schreiber noted.
This significant leap forward eliminates the need for South Africans to undertake additional travel to passport offices merely to collect their documents, a common inconvenience that has long plagued citizens abroad.
Available for a fee between US$30 (approximately R520) and US$60 (approximately R1 041), the service aims to address long-standing issues experienced by South Africans in the diaspora.
‘This bold reform not only promotes inclusivity but also signifies a watershed moment for TeamHomeAffairs as we strive to transform our department into a world leader in identity management,’ Schreiber added.
As part of a broader vision to deliver Home Affairs services directly to South Africans at home and abroad, the initiative is seen as a crucial step in the department’s digital transformation journey.
‘We are working relentlessly to decentralise access and bring our services to South Africans right where they live anywhere in the world,’ he stated.
Schreiber also indicated that this initial rollout for citizens abroad will serve as a testing ground for refining the delivery process before expanding the option to all clients within South Africa. Once the service proves efficient and secure, it is expected to scale up to provide doorstep delivery for all documents, potentially in collaboration with the banking sector.
