South Africans will get 14 public holidays in 2023, two more than the 12 public holidays that are determined by the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994 (Act).

The 2 January and 25 September are additional public holidays in 2023, to observe New Year’s Day and Heritage Day, which both fall on a Sunday.
The Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994 (Act) provides that “whenever any public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a public holiday.” The law states that when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, it is still regarded as a public holiday, and the Monday following the public holiday becomes an additional public holiday.
The 14 South African public holidays in 2023 are:
- New Year’s Day – Sunday, 1 January
- New Year’s Day observed – Monday, 2 January
- Human Rights Day – Tuesday, 21 March
- Good Friday – Friday, 7 April
- Eater Monday /Family Day – Monday, 10 April
- Freedom Day – Thursday, 27 April
- Workers’ Day – Monday, 1 May
- Youth Day – Friday, 16 June
- National Women’s Day – Wednesday, 9 August
- Heritage Day – Sunday, 24 September
- Public holiday Heritage Day observed – Monday, 25 September
- Day of Reconciliation – Saturday, 16 December
- Christmas Day – Monday, 25 December
- Boxing Day / Day of Goodwill – Tuesday, 26 December
