Dr Esther Mahlangu usually graces headlines for praiseworthy reasons. She is, after all, a South African-based, but internationally acclaimed artist who pioneered the integration of niche cultural intersection by bringing her heritage to the forefront of the global art world. As a Ndebele woman, the bold and bespoke geometric designs she has created over the decades have remained true to her heritage.
Late last year, she designed a sneaker valued at R7.7million, where her culture met street culture in a breathtaking merging.

However, recently Dr Mahlangu’s name saw public attention for far darker reasons. The local icon was attacked in her home at Siyabuswa in Mpumalanga on March 19.
She was robbed of money and her firearm. The firearm had reportedly been kept in a safe for over 20 years as Sowetan Live reports.
Eyewitness News confer that Dr Mahlangu was also punched and strangled by the perpetrator and her hands were tied with a cable, leaving her in a deeper state of vulnerability beyond her 87-year-old state.
The perpetrator is still at large as Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, Provincial SAPS spokesperson stated. Even those close to the artist are suspects.
Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane indicated that immediate family members must not take the police investigating them personally, should the need arise.
“She is an international icon. Her safety is paramount. We have assembled a team to assess her security details. The local police officers will be patrolling her vicinity daily.
“In due course, we will be arresting the suspect. Mahlangu doesn’t deserve to be dehumanised the way she was,” Mtsweni-Tsipane said.
