Retail group, SPAR has walked back on its controversial decision to sell live animals at its newly launched Pet Storey outlet in Boksburg. The move follows widespread backlash from animal rescue organisations, welfare advocates, and members of the public.
According to MSN news, the retailer confirmed late on Saturday evening that it would completely end the sale of birds, reptiles, mammals, and invertebrates at all Pet Storey locations. The decision came after mounting criticism and a fast-growing online petition calling for an immediate halt to animal sales.
Animal groups had reacted strongly to the initial launch, which included the sale of puppies. One of the leading organisations, BarkingMad SA, publicly thanked supporters for rallying against the practice. In a statement shared on Facebook, the group said: ‘You have made a huge difference in the lives of animals by stopping this new franchise of pet stores from selling live animals.’

In the company’s own words, quoted by MSN, SPAR said: ‘We have heard and understand all concerns raised following the launch of our first Pet Storey store in Boksburg. We apologise sincerely for the distress this has caused.’
The retailer went on to describe its original intent for Pet Storey as being ‘a specialised pet product retailer, focused on accessible pet care, products and services, creating a space where pets are invited to visit with their owners.’
While animal groups welcomed the announcement, concerns remain. BarkingMad SA noted that SPAR’s updated statement did not mention fish, saying they would follow up to ensure the policy extends further.
