Frawley, who came on late in the game, successfully slotted two drop goals in the closing moments, overturning what seemed to be a certain Springbok victory as they led 24-19.
Despite a resilient second-half comeback from the Boks, who trailed 16-6 at half-time, Ireland’s high-tempo play in the second half paid off. All of South Africa’s points came from eight penalties kicked by flyhalf Handre Pollard.
Though the world champions dominated Ireland in the scrums, they ultimately couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities.
As the Boks led 24-19 late in the game, it appeared they had done enough to secure the win. However, Frawley’s last-minute heroics left the Kings Park crowd in stunned silence.
Ireland’s scrumhalf Conor Murray scored the only try of the match in the first half, with flyhalf Jack Crowley adding a conversion and four penalties.
The result means the series is tied at 1-1.
