The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) has launched a strategic review of commercial opportunities tied to the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, a move that may ultimately result in a new naming rights partner for the iconic stadium.
The process follows the nearing conclusion of the venue’s current sponsorship agreement with World Sports Betting, opening the door for fresh branding and long-term investment, as reported by BusinessTech.
To guide the transition, WPCA has partnered with marketing firm Megapro and appointed global consultancy Futures Sport and Entertainment to independently evaluate the commercial value of its assets.
Currently branded as the World Sports Betting (WSB) Newlands Cricket Ground, the stadium’s naming rights agreement is approaching expiry, a natural moment for administrators to reassess partnerships and long-term strategy.
WPCA CEO Corrie van Zyl described the collaboration with Megapro as a forward-looking step rather than a simple sponsorship renewal.
‘Partnering with Megapro is a strategic move to unlock the full commercial potential of our assets,’ he said.
The timing of the review aligns with a significant cricket calendar approaching for Cape Town. The 2026/2027 international season is expected to bring renewed global attention to Newlands, including:
-
Two major Test matches against Australia and England
-
A One Day International fixture against Bangladesh
-
The traditional New Year’s Test match
With international cricket returning at full scale, WPCA believes the venue presents an attractive platform for global brands seeking visibility through sport.
To ensure the process is grounded in market realities, Futures Sport and Entertainment has been tasked with conducting an independent valuation of WPCA’s commercial assets.
Megapro CEO Marc Jury said the upcoming season represents a unique commercial window.
‘With world-class international cricket returning to Cape Town, the 2026/27 season offers brands a powerful platform to align with one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting properties.’
He added that the valuation process aims to structure partnerships capable of delivering sustainable value for both cricket administrators and commercial partners.
