In a moment that felt written by the football gods themselves, the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw has delivered a spectacular case of déjà vu, as the tournament will kick off with a poetic re-run, as South Africa and Mexico, the very same pairing that opened the 2010 World Cup, are set to clash again at the iconic Azteca Stadium on June 11, 2026.
The symmetry is striking. Bafana Bafana, appearing in their first World Cup since that memorable 2010 tournament, will walk out at the Azteca Stadium, a venue steeped in World Cup legend, to face Mexico, as per SuperSport.
The other host nations join quickly, as the United States will begin against Paraguay in Los Angeles on June 12, while Canada will play in Toronto, likely against a playoff winner that could be Italy.
For the world champions, the road to defend their crown is set,as Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, will start their title defense in Group J against Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.
The newly introduced seeding system, reports confirm, ensures the top four ranked teams, Spain, Argentina, France, and England, cannot meet until the semifinals, should they all win their groups.
Other heavyweight stories emerged. Brazil face a formidable Group C with 2022 semifinalists Morocco, Haiti, and a Scotland side returning to the finals for the first time since 1998. That year, Scotland also opened their tournament against Brazil.
Another major rematch lies in wait in Group I, where France will face Senegal in a direct callback to Senegal’s stunning upset of the then-titleholders in the 2002 World Cup opener.
For England, the draw offers a chance for redemption. They will start their Group L campaign against Croatia, the team that dashed their 2018 semifinal dreams, before also facing Ghana and Panama.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal will navigate a potentially tricky Group K, where they will face Colombia and Uzbekistan, as well as the winner of a final playoff round
The sheer scale of the 2026 event is unprecedented. The 48 teams, including six yet-to-be-decided playoff winners, will contest a mammoth 104 matches across 16 cities.
The final is scheduled for July 19 in New Jersey. Specific venues and kickoff times for all matches will be announced in a separate broadcast event.
