The road, a key route linking several metro neighbourhoods to the N2, is proposed to be renamed Siyamthanda Kolisi Road.
Martin says one of the Springboks’ supporters, Sherwin Jeptha, submitted the application, SABC News reports.
Jephta believes it is especially fitting because Kolisi hails from Zwide in Gqeberha.
Jeptha’s journey to a healthier lifestyle rekindled his love for rugby and reminded him of the Springboks’ ‘better together’ ethos, News24 reports.
He explained that Kolisi’s name embodies love and affection, and in isiXhosa culture, it symbolises hope and good values.
‘Siya was given this name, and now he represents this role as a beloved national figure who united South Africans through his leadership as the first black captain of the Springboks,’ Jephta added.
Jeptha said the name change would promote nation-building and inclusivity, as Kolisi symbolises unity. He plans to ask Kolisi’s permission during this weekend’s match.
Martin adds that public hearings will be held for the name change.
‘The Eastern Cape Geographical Names has received committee has received an application to Siya Kolisi’s name. This is the second name we have received including R75 to become Rassie Erasmus. What we are doing is to register all these names and will consult with relevant municipalities. We will consult NMB and public hearings will be held.’
Martin added that no timeline exists for the application, as several processes must be followed first.
The next steps include registering it, notifying Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, and sending the details to the MEC of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture before reaching the South African Geographical Names Council.
