Patients and workers at New Somerset hospital were left traumatised on Saturday evening when a patient who was about to be discharged disarmed a police officer and started firing shots.
Two patients, aged 42 and 48 were caught in the crossfire and were declared dead on the scene. The 32-year-old constable, an officer at Sea Point station, was severely wounded and transported to a different hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead.
Health deputy minister Sibongiseni Dhlomo and Western Cape health MEC Momafrench Mbombo visited the hospital over the weekend and declared that counselling services would be available to staff who witnessed the incident, as per EWN.
