A raid at the Goodwood prison over the weekend by the Western Cape Correctional Services reportedly produced a haul of contraband.

According to IOL, Correctional Services regional commissioner Delekile Klaas said a stash of illegal items was confiscated in raids at the prison on Saturday.

Klaas said some of the items seized were 12 cellphones with SIM cards, various sharp objects, cash, dagga, tip and mandrax.

The operation was an ongoing programme to ensure that correctional facilities become centres for rehabilitation and not breeding grounds for drug distribution and crime.

EWN reported on Tuesday that following the search, the Western Cape Correctional Services had admitted that it was likely that there were more corrupt officials in its ranks.

“An internal probe and a police investigation are underway after contraband was confiscated at Goodwood prison on Saturday,” the report said.
