The City’s Fire and Rescue Department recovered the body of Vernon Williams (48) who fell into a hole he dug on his property at Lesar Court, Steenberg.
Williams’ body then got covered by sand while he was trying to get rid of debris in his yard by dumping it into the hole.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department‘s spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, “The hole was adjacent to (an) informal structure, and it is believed that the deceased wanted to dispose of the rubble on the property, and that is when the sand caved in on him. Crews from Lakeside, Fish Hoek, Ottery and Roeland Street searched tirelessly for his body.”
The 48-year-old man had been reported missing by his family citing his failure to return home on 6 October.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed Williams’ identity and that the body was discovered under the sand in the hole he had dug.
According to News24, SAPS is treating the incident as treated as a body recovery.
