A woman has been arrested after the body of her 10-month-old baby was discovered in an open field near Steenberg High School, Cape {town} Etc reports.
A passerby made the grim discovery in Verde Road, Steenberg, just after 2pm on Thursday and alerted authorities. Hours later, the child’s mother (33) turned herself in at the police station.
Steenberg police have registered a murder case.
‘Steenberg police registered a murder case following the discovery of the body of a 10-month-old infant on Thursday at about 2pm at an open field, Verde Road, Steenberg. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death. A 33-year-old female was arrested for a charge of murder,’ said police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyle.
He confirmed that the case will be transferred to the Wynberg Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit for further investigation.
Authorities are expected to provide more details once the post-mortem results are available. The suspect is due to appear in court soon.
