Stellenbosch University celebrated after several current and former Maties players helped South Africa win the Senior Africa Cup and qualify for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.
According to SA Hockey, the women’s team beat Ghana 4-0 in the final to claim the continental title and a World Cup berth.
Against a familiar Ghanaian team, they had only just edged 3–2 in the group, but South Africa produced a calm, dominant display when it counted.
Maties’ contributors included current players Caylin Maree, Ongeziwe Mali and Jeanri Thomas, with coach Lenise Marais among the staff who travelled with the squad.

Alumni Stephanie Botha, Kayla de Waal and Quanita Bobbs also played roles in the campaign.
Stellenbosch Sport shared its pride on Facebook and thanked the players for their work. ‘We are incredibly proud of your achievement,’ the university wrote, praising the squad’s commitment and performance.
The qualification was confirmed by the International Hockey Federation, which listed South Africa among the teams earning direct entry to the 2026 World Cup.
