For the first time, Stellenbosch University (SU) will be providing isiXhosa-speaking students with resource materials in their home language, enabling them to make knowledgeable subject and career decisions.
According to IOL, the university previously only offered resource materials in English and Afrikaans. The isiXhosa resource material will be available on SU’s Language Day on Thursday, September 30, and distributed amongst grade 9 and 11 learners.
“This will provide an opportunity for academics, students and professional staff in academic support services to learn from each other by reimagining the conversations around language at SU,” the university said.
Reference materials, developed by SU’s Centre for Student Recruitment and Career Advice includes:
- Frequently asked questions document for grades 9 and 11
- A booklet of subject choices and career advice for grades 9 and 11
- Presentation video for grades 9 and 11
Similar resources will be made available to grade 12 learners from February, reports The Bharat Express News.
Director of the Center for Student Recruitment and Career Advice, Leon van den Heever said SU is a multilingual institution that aims to serve its prospective market in three official languages of the Western Cape – English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.
“Stellenbosch University is committed to strategic enrolment management aimed at enhancing access and inclusivity, as well as to expand the University’s knowledge offering to serve new students,” says van den Heever.
“During a year of disruptive changes, there have been few constants. But the need for higher education to deliver well-rounded professionals to the marketplace, building our nation and economy, is stronger than ever,” he added.
