South Africa’s leading cinema chain, Ster-Kinekor, has announced the impending closure of its Cavendish Square location in Claremont, Cape Town. The final screenings at this venue are scheduled for 2 June 2025, following the non-renewal of its lease agreement.
This decision is part of Ster-Kinekor’s broader strategy to optimise operations in response to various challenges, including economic pressures, loadshedding and shifts in the entertainment industry landscape.
Despite initial plans to close up to nine cinemas nationwide and retrench 236 employees, the company has managed to limit closures to two cinemas and reduce job cuts to fewer than 60 positions.
CEO Mark Sardi attributed this outcome to successful negotiations with landlords and distributors, as well as the implementation of cost-cutting measures. He also indicated that Ster-Kinekor is exploring innovative avenues to enhance its offerings, such as introducing e-gaming and other alternative entertainment experiences in its cinemas.
While the closure of the Cavendish Square cinema marks the end of an era for local moviegoers, Ster-Kinekor remains committed to delivering exceptional cinematic experiences at its remaining locations. The company continues to adapt to the evolving entertainment landscape, ensuring that patrons can enjoy quality movie experiences across its network of theatres.
