Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu arrived in Gqeberha carrying enormous expectation, and he wasted no time showing why he is regarded as one of the most exciting flyhalves in the game, dictating play from the opening moments and setting the tone for a commanding Stormers victory, Cape {town} Etc reports.
A crowd of 17 058 watched as the Cape side stretched their winning run to eight matches across all competitions, backing up last weekend’s success in the Investec Champions Cup with a convincing 42–21 triumph that featured six tries and a strong second-half finish.
From the kickoff, the Stormers played with pace and intent, exploding into life and crossing four times inside the opening quarter, although two of those efforts were chalked off following TMO reviews, with BJ Dixon and Paul de Villiers left frustrated after seeing their tries ruled out.
That did little to halt the momentum, as Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s sharp kicking game and clever distribution created opportunities out wide, allowing Dylen Maart and Leolin Zas to cash in early and give the visitors complete control of territory and possession.
While the young flyhalf dazzled with ball in hand, it was his game management that stood out, mixing precision kicks with measured passing to keep La Rochelle under constant pressure, even as the contest became increasingly stop-start.
La Rochelle, fielding a side missing many senior figures, slowed the rhythm whenever possible, and a string of scrum penalties and lengthy TMO interruptions dragged the match into a frustrating grind late in the first half.
Despite conceding a maul try and spending long periods defending close to their own line, the Stormers showed resilience, with Paul de Villiers producing a series of vital turnovers and earning the Player of the Match award for his tireless work.
Limited possession in the closing stages of the half forced the Stormers to rely on Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s boot, but his composure ensured a 16–7 advantage at the interval.
The second half lacked the same intensity, yet the Stormers struck first, responded well after La Rochelle hit back, and then delivered a decisive double that secured the bonus point and removed any doubt about the outcome.
While the coaching staff may reflect on missed opportunities for a more ruthless display, the result confirmed another confident step forward, built on flair, control and an ever-growing belief within this Stormers side.
