Cape Town is bracing for a major traffic headache as tens of thousands of rugby fans descend on the city for Saturday’s blockbuster Stormers vs Bulls United Rugby Championship clash at the Cape Town Stadium on 3 January.
With more than 40 000 spectators expected, both visitors and locals have been warned that congestion around the stadium precinct will build up well before kick-off.
As with previous large-scale events at the venue, roads feeding into the area are likely to seize up hours in advance, particularly routes coming from the N1 and the elevated freeway. Authorities are urging supporters not to leave travel plans to the last minute, with stadium gates opening at 3pm ahead of the 6pm kick-off.
In an effort to limit the number of private vehicles heading toward the stadium, the City of Cape Town will roll out a free MyCiTi shuttle service exclusively for ticket holders. Buses will run from the Civic Centre, Thibault Square and the Cape Town International Convention Centre, starting at 2:30pm, with return trips continuing until 22:00 after the final whistle.

For those choosing to drive, parking around the stadium will be limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis from 2pm. Approximately 1 000 paid bays will be available at the CTICC, and motorists are encouraged to secure these online. Additional paid parking options include Parkalot on Jack Craig Street and Harbour Arch, while off-street parking in the CBD will be free from 1pm, as per The South African.
Traffic disruptions are expected to affect key routes such as Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Stephan Way, Vlei Road and Granger Bay Boulevard from as early as 6am and are likely to continue until well after the match ends. City officials have once again appealed to fans to make use of public transport where possible and to factor in extra travel time to avoid missing any of the action.
