A reported 63 people, including 37 students, have tested positive for COVID-19 after attending an event at Tin Roof, a popular bar in Claremont. Premier Alan Winde is now calling for an investigation into the incident.

News24 first broke the news that dozens of Southern Suburbs learners had attended the same event, and tested positive following the night out. The bar had allegedly promised low prices for alcohol on their social media accounts prior to the event.

There have been allegations that the club was not following COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

In a statement, Winde said: “There are some other concerning allegations around this event, and we are now requesting a full investigation into this bar/club in question – including by SAPS and the Western Cape Liquor Authority.”

Speaking to News24, Tin Roof’s James Truter was adamant that they followed all the necessary regulations, including temperature scanning, enforcing the wearing of masks to and from the bar, and sanitising hands while buying drinks.

Winde urged locals and establishments in the province to follow the rules to avoid a second surge of coronavirus infections.

“Our call is that residents and businesses need to play their part so that we can move forward and make sure that this province is safe from the spread of the virus. In this case, specifically, we noticed that 63 cases are linked to one single bar or club.

“In this case specifically, we notice that 63 cases are linked to one bar or club and of those were learners in matric. We also understand that this is going to put pressure on the matric system.”
