In a landmark decision on Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a law that effectively bans TikTok in the country starting Sunday, citing national security concerns linked to its Chinese ownership, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The ruling ends a lengthy legal battle that has involved free speech, security issues, and the app’s massive cultural impact.
TikTok, which has captivated millions of Americans, particularly younger users, faced intense scrutiny over the past years for its data collection practices and its connection to China. Despite the app’s deep integration into American culture, with its influence on entertainment, politics, and even social movements, the court sided with the government’s concerns over national security.
The court acknowledged TikTok’s role as a major platform for self-expression and community but supported Congress’ decision to pursue a ban or forced sale of the app due to its ties to a foreign government. This ruling could signal the end of TikTok’s operations in the U.S. if it remains under the control of its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.
While TikTok is expected to cease operations if the law stands, there remains some hope for the platform. President-elect Donald Trump, set to take office the day after the ruling, has indicated plans to explore ways to save the app, though the legal pathways are unclear.
TikTok had challenged the law, arguing that less drastic measures could address the government’s concerns. However, the Supreme Court’s opinion emphasised the severity of the national security risks posed by TikTok’s data collection and its potential for manipulation by the Chinese government.
This decision has raised alarm among content creators and users who rely on the platform for their livelihood, with many fearing the loss of income and audience. However, the court has given the U.S. government considerable authority to act in matters of national security, a decision that may have lasting implications for tech companies operating under foreign influence.
