City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services department made an arrest this past weekend of a suspected arsonist, whose actions were captured on CCTV.
This incident adds to a significant string of 375 arrests made by city enforcement agencies within the week.
The arrest occurred just after midnight on Saturday, 17 January, when the Traffic Communications Centre, aided by the Freeway Management System (FMS) cameras, observed a figure setting fire to vegetation on the M5 northbound, just before Berkeley Road.
Quick-thinking personnel, comprising the Traffic Communications dispatcher, the FMS operator, and the Highway Patrol, allowed officers to catch the suspect in the act, subsequently detaining him at Maitland SAPS.
A formal case of arson has now been registered.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, expressed his frustration over such deliberate acts of vandalism.
‘We shared statistics just a few days ago about the pressure our services have absorbed to deal with the increase in vegetation and residential fires. To have individuals who deliberately set out to cause more pain and potential harm in this manner is incredibly frustrating,’ he said.
The occurrence of multiple fires along the M5 corridor last week has further compounded concerns, with hopes that an investigation will encompass a thorough examination of all related incidents.
The successful arrest serves as a testament to the important role technology plays in modern law enforcement. ‘This arrest and the manner in which it was made is also a timely reminder of just how useful technology is in the fight against crime, particularly when utilised properly,’ added Smith.
Moreover, this arrest comes amid broader enforcement efforts across the city, with Traffic Officers recording 73,225 offences, impounding 143 public transport vehicles, and executing 1,410 warrants of arrest.
Relatedly, officers made 63 arrests, which included 50 for driving under the influence of alcohol, five for reckless and negligent driving, and eight for various other offences.
Concurrently, Metro Police officers made 110 arrests, issued 3,577 traffic and by-law fines, and seized illicit items including drugs and a firearm.
Law Enforcement Officers alone accounted for 202 arrests and issued a staggering 6,877 notices.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre was inundated with 1,211 calls for assistance over the weekend, including 429 requests for medical aid, 46 assault cases, and numerous reports of traffic incidents and domestic violence.
The City of Cape Town urges the public to continue reporting emergencies or any suspicious activities by contacting the Public Emergency Communication Centre at 021 480 7700.
Residents are asked to provide detailed information, such as the time, exact address, and a brief description of the incident.
