Delft police officer concerns deepened on Monday after SAPS said three suspects were arrested following an attack outside the Delft Community Service Centre in the early hours of 8 June 2026, Cape {town} Etc reports.
SAPS said the incident happened at about 2:05am, when a constable standing outside the station was approached and struck on the head, leaving him seriously injured.
A fellow officer who witnessed the attack responded immediately and fired warning shots, which led the suspects to flee the scene.
SAPS said the suspects abandoned their vehicle before a coordinated pursuit involving SAPS members and LEAP officers led to arrests. Officers detained two men aged 23 and 25, along with a 23-year-old woman, and recovered the axe believed to have been used in the attack.
SAPS said the injured constable was taken to a medical facility for treatment and is in a stable condition. The service added, ‘The SAPS condemns the violent attack on a police officer at Delft SAPS during the early hours of Monday, 8 June 2026.’
The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks police officers face while on duty in the Western Cape.
