Three young suspects from Hanover Park have been arrested after a terrifying robbery targeting an e-hailing driver on Christmas Eve in Rylands, Cape Town, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The arrests follow a viral video that has sparked outrage on social media and garnered widespread attention.
The robbery, which took place on 24 December, left Ali Zaib, a 36-year-old Pakistani father of five, shaken. Zaib had just completed his prayers at the mosque before heading to a pickup point in Rylands for a trip to Woodstock when the attackers struck. At first, Zaib did not perceive the teenaged suspects as a serious threat, but within moments, one of them pulled out a knife and threatened him.
In the chilling footage shared widely online, Zaib is seen complying with the robbers’ demands, handing over his phone’s access code and allowing them to take what they wanted. The suspects, wielding knives, surrounded his vehicle in a calculated assault, creating a tense and dangerous situation.
Zaib, who was left traumatised by the experience, said he was relieved to learn that police had arrested the suspects. Speaking with IOL, Zaib confirmed that his phone had been recovered and expressed gratitude for the swift action by law enforcement. However, the experience has left him with a deep sense of fear, leading him to vow never to work in the Cape Flats area again.
Police confirm arrests of robbery suspects
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed the capture of three suspects aged between 18 and 21 in connection with the robbery. ‘This office can confirm that three suspects were arrested in connection with the e-hailing driver in Athlone,’ Twigg stated.
According to police reports, the suspects are affiliated with the notorious IGB gang from Hanover Park. However, they had disappeared from the area shortly after the video went viral. Investigators tracked the suspects to Mitchells Plain, where they were found relaxing in a park on January 3. The suspects were surrounded by the Safety & Security Investigative Unit (SSIU) and arrested without further incident.
In addition to the arrests, investigators gathered valuable information on the phone’s whereabouts. Upon tracing the device, it was recovered and booked as evidence.
JP Smith urges more support for local investigative units
JP Smith, the City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, commended the law enforcement agencies for their role in the arrest. He also took the opportunity to highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the City’s Safety & Security Investigative Unit (SSIU).
Smith explained that, although the suspects had been identified as members of the IGB gang by January 2, resources and investigative capacity within SAPS are severely constrained. ‘It is an accepted fact our investigative resources with SAPS are severely constrained, and as a municipality, we have been steadily building our own internal investigative capacity,’ Smith said.
He further emphasised the City’s need for expanded authority to assist in investigations. ‘If we are granted Investigative authority as we are requesting, we can readily assist SAPS in helping to bring criminals to book and ensure they are suitably prosecuted,’ he added.
Smith’s comments also referenced challenges faced by the City in developing investigative capacity, including opposition from the previous police minister and political party GOOD, which had argued against the City’s involvement in investigations. Despite these setbacks, Smith affirmed the City’s commitment to enhancing local safety and security efforts.
