Table Mountain has emerged as a global hotspot for hikers and Instagrammers alike, clinching the title as home of South Africa’s busiest hiking venue.

Earlier this year, adventure Tour operator Explore Worldwide surveyed to find out which hikes across the globe are the most popular. The research analysed the length of popular walking routes and the number of associated Instagram posts.
With an average of 1 189 Instagram posts per kilometre of trail, Table Mountain took the title of South Africa’s busiest hiking venue and seventh busiest in the world.
In comparison, Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia was ranked the world’s most crowded hike with more than 22 000 Instagram posts per kilometre. Second place went to the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, with 6 723 posts.

Kosta Papageorgiou, Friends of Lions Head and Signal Hill conservation group told Cape Talk that Table Mountain is the ‘Mecca of hiking’, adding that there is a solution to the congestion issue.
‘I think there’s so many other ways to solve this problem… it’s always going to be popular, but there are 46 ways to get up Table Mountain. We have to encourage people to use all of them. We should be educating people about other routes available with SANPARKS and volunteers.’
