A new study by Remitly, a leading digital financial services provider for immigrants and their families has revealed that the ‘Top of the Rock’ which sits atop New York City’s famous Rockefeller Center offers the best view in the entire world.
Seeking out the picture-perfect view of a new location is often a priority for travellers and people moving to a new city, so Remitly analysed over 1.4 million TripAdvisor reviews to find which attractions have left visitors talking about its view most regularly. The results were then ranked to name the greatest viewpoints in the world, in addition to those within various countries.
In Africa the best view is revealed with Table Mountain, which overlooks Cape Town’s waterfront and harbour, winning Africa’s best view, while Johannesburg’s Aerial Cableway Hartbeespoort ranks as Africa’s second best viewpoint. Other renowned viewpoints from the continent include the Cairo Tower, Egypt, Kasbah des Oudaias, Morocco and Mount Entoto, Ethiopia also appearing in the rankings for Africa.
The 10 Best Viewpoints in Africa:
- Table Mountain, South Africa
- Aerial Cableway Hartbeespoort, South Africa

As for the rest of the world, the findings provide inspiration no matter where you’re travelling or moving to.
With its breath-taking view mentioned by reviewers over 42,000 times, the Rockefeller Center’s ‘Top of the Rock’ takes the crown. With panoramic views of the New York skyline, punctuated with iconic sights such as the Empire State Building, Central Park and even the Statue of Liberty, it’s hard to argue its position at the top.
The London Eye follows, providing an unrivalled view for London newcomers on the banks of the River Thames, while the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and Prague’s Charles Bridge also feature in the top ten.
Jago McKenzie, Principal Business Manager at Remitly comments: “Whether you’ve moved somewhere new or are just visiting somewhere for the first time, getting a good view of a place can be a great way to get a feel for the location, and give that satisfying feeling that you’ve truly ‘arrived’.
Remitly analysed TripAdvisor data from every country in the world, in addition to each US state and 253 cities around the globe. Using the ‘Things to Do’ section of the TripAdvisor website, the attractions in each location that had the highest number of mentions of ‘view’ (English language) in their reviews were ranked as providing the best view for the specific location (country, state or city).
Results where the term ‘view’ was used negatively or for another context (a sports stadium offering a good view of the pitch) were omitted from the final results.
