A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed near Naomi Street, Avonwood, on Wednesday at around 10am. According to police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk, the suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.
SABC News detailed that the teen was walking alone in the street when he was approached by an unknown man who shot at him. The number of suspects involved has yet to be clarified.
Imran Mukadam, the chairperson of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in the area, said that it is unclear if the shooting is gang-related and that details surrounding the murder are still being investigated.
IOL quoted Mukadam as saying that the boy was shot “execution style.” He added that any murder, gang-related or not, is unnecessary, and “no child or adult deserves to be shot in the head like a dog.”
Further, Mukadam said that the incident—one of many in recent weeks—is a “wake-up” call for a greater police presence. He added that many incidents have been reported in the Avonwood area, but there hasn’t been an adequate response.
More intensive operations, like patrols and the visibility of more law enforcement officers, have been called for.
A case of murder has been registered for investigation.
