As a result of the Competition Commission’s data services market inquiry, Telkom will slash its fibre prices to wholesalers. This could mean a substantial decrease for individuals who use fibre.

The amount individuals will save per month depends on the rand amount decrease that Telkom rolls out to wholesale customers. Telkom owns the largest fibre optic network in South Africa and its wholesale customers include ISPs like Afrihost, Axxess and MWeb.

The agreement between Telkom and the Competition Commission was made on Tuesday, April 14. According to Business Insider the agreement to reduce its rates charged to ISPs will be significant.

The exact amount that Telkom charged ISPs has been kept confidential by the Competition Commission.

Tembinkosi Bonakele from the Competition Commission stated that the agreement will lead to lower prices for individuals and small business owners. The exact price drop per month for individual consumers, however, is still to be determined.
