Independent Media’s shocking docuseries titled “Baby Trade” has been removed as a finalist for a global journalist award.
The story was shortlisted for an International News Media Award (INMA) but was met with outrage from the South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) who wrote to INMA in order to get the docuseries disqualified, as per News24.
The docuseries was nominated as a finalist for the category: Best Use of Social Media.
The story follows Gosiame Thamara Sithole, the mother of the alleged Tembisa 10 and what Independent Media has claimed to be a dark story that delves into the underbelly of human trafficking in South Africa.
Sanef responded via a statement and claimed that it was “appalled” by the nomination.
Following the removal of the docuseries, Sanef has expressed a sense of relief, welcoming the removal.
“Sanef works hard towards ethical journalism and trust in the media, and this entry worked against two pivotal pillars,” it indicated to Bizcommunity.com.
Following Sanef’s outrage and call for the series’ disqualification, Independent Media had demanded an apology from the organisation.
