The broadcasting veteran was married to Thato Sikwane – or DJ Fresh, as he is more famously known – for 20 years until their divorce in 2022. Taking to Instagram, he confirmed that Thabiso passed away at the age of 50, around 6:30am.
‘We are told it could have been a cardiac event. But what could have caused it, hasn’t been ascertained,’ said DJ Fresh.
‘We await a postmortem that would give everyone clarity. It doesn’t make sense to anyone, how this could happen out of the blue. We’ll keep you updated on memorial and funeral details.’
In a statement announcing her death, Thabiso’s family said they pray that her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
‘It is with profound sadness to announce the passing of Thabiso, whose dedication and passion for Christ, family life and the Media & Entertainment industry left an indelible mark on colleagues and audiences alike,’ they said.
‘During her illustrious career on Radio & TV, she produced, hosted and covered significant events, shaped narratives and inspired many.’
Just hours later, another profound loss hits the entertainment world as the Mbangeni family announces the death of 47-year-old Jessica Mbangeni.
‘It is with deep sorrow and profound sadness that we, the family of Dr Bishop Jessica Mbangeni, announce her passing,’ read the statement. ‘Our beloved mother, sister and people’s praise poet, Bishop Jessica Mbangeni, has left us to join the ancestors.’
Renowned for her vibrant Xhosa praise poetry, music and African fashion, Mbangeni was a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir.
‘Dr Bishop Jessica was a beacon of light, a voice of wisdom and a source of inspiration to many. Her contributions to our community and the world as a praise poet, spiritual leader and cultural ambassador were immeasurable, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched,’ continued the statement.
While details surrounding her death were not revealed, the family added that further details regarding her memorial service and funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.
The family also requested privacy as they grieve during this difficult time and expressed a deep appreciation ‘of the love and support from friends, fans and the community’.
