Thabo Bester was back in the dock on Friday, 5 December, making yet another pre-trial appearance at the Free State High Court, and using the opportunity to lodge a fresh batch of complaints through his defence team.
The convicted killer and fraudster, whose elaborate 2022 escape stunned the country, is still months away from standing trial.
Bester and several co-accused, among them Dr Nandipha Magudumana, with whom he has long been linked, are facing charges connected to his break-out from the Mangaung Correctional Centre, as well as allegations of corpse tampering and obstruction of justice. Their long-awaited trial has been pencilled in for July 2026 following repeated delays.
While the main case remains on ice, Bester continues to push multiple side applications that must be settled before proceedings can start. GroundUp reports that he currently has six active matters tied to his arrest and detention conditions. These range from challenging how he is held at Kgosi Mampuru’s C-Max unit to disputing the legality of his 2023 arrest in Tanzania, where he was apprehended while fleeing South Africa.
He is also demanding access to classified documents and telephonic records linked to the presidency and International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola. In addition, he wants his frozen bank accounts reinstated, access to a laptop for case preparation, and improved communication channels with his lawyers.
During Friday’s appearance, his advocate, MoAfrika Wa Maila, asked Judge Mareena Opperman to grant Bester permission to receive specialised meals while in court. The defence also pressed for answers regarding Bester’s claims that several items, including cash, computers, and mobile phones, went missing during his arrest.
Bester, Magudumana and the rest of the accused group are scheduled to return for another pre-trial session on 18 March 2026. Magudumana is meanwhile pursuing her own legal challenge relating to the manner of her arrest and deportation.
If all preliminary matters are concluded in time, the main trial is expected to run from 20 July to 18 September 2026.
