A recent report published by the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), held that the academic institution has set a superb standard for gender equity in South African tertiary education, Cape {town} Etc reports.

The report, titled The State of Gender Transformation at Tertiary Institutions, undertook an analysis of several factors, believed to play an important role in the attainment of gender equality in higher education institutions.
Factors taken into consideration include the vulnerabilities and risks experienced by females and males at the relevant institutions as both employees and students, the general level of compliance by employers with legislation aiming to promote gender equality and policy gaps and shortcomings.
Transformation hearings were further conducted at selected tertiary institutions including Walter Sisulu University, the University of Fort Hare, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and the University of Western Cape.
The report ultimately commended UWC for its continued commitment to fostering gender equality, specifically as it pertains to its notable representation of women within the workforce.
Approximately 60% of UWC’s employees are women. The representation of women in the workplace ranges from roles in top management and academic sectors to administrative positions.
The report concludes by labelling UWC as a model for gender equity initiatives and advises other academic institutions to follow in its footsteps, reports University World News.
