The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has advised that various parts of the Mother City will experience water supply disruptions this week as the team conducts planned work on its water supply infrastructure, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The following areas will be affected:
Maintenance work: pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements
Pinehaven, Welcome Glen, De Gama Park and the Woodlands area off Dido Valley Road
- From Monday, 7 April onwards
According to the directorate, dam storage levels in the Simon’s Town area are currently very low, necessitating that the Brooklands Water Treatment Plant (WTP) operations be amended accordingly.
During this indefinite time, the Brooklands WTP will only be operational from midday Fridays until Monday mornings with a reduced drinking water production of two Mega litres per day.
Residents in these areas are advised to urgently reduce their water consumption to ensure that the water supply is sustained and that the local reservoir levels are not compromised.
Newlands, Rondebosch, Rosebank, UCT, Kenilworth and Wynberg
- Monday, 5 May, to Friday, 16 May
Having commenced with the annual cleaning of the Newlands Reservoir, the directorate warned that residents in these areas may experience lower-than-usual water pressure until the cleaning is complete on Friday, 16 May.
Somerset West
- Tuesday, 13 May, from 8am to 4pm
The water supply to this area will be shut off temporarily to enable the maintenance team to safely access the water main in the area for a camera inspection of a section of the pipeline.
According to the directorate, this will determine the internal condition of the pipeline as well as the need for replacement or upgrade.
‘Due to the location of the work on the water supply network, some parts of Somerset West will have water at lower-than-usual water pressure and others will experience no water,’ said the directorate.
Part of Fish Hoek
- Tuesday, 13 May, from 9am to 5:30pm
The water supply to this area will be shut off temporarily to enable the maintenance team to connect the newly installed pipelines to the existing infrastructure and install control valves on the water supply main in the area.
Residents in Harrington Street, Arthur Wright Road, Carmichael Road and surrounding areas, Fish Hoek and possibly the immediate surrounding streets will experience no water during this period.
Kelderhof Estate area in the Helderberg
- Thursday, 15 May, from 9am to 7pm
The water supply to this area will be shut off temporarily to enable the maintenance team to safely connect a pressure-reducing valve (PRV) and a water meter on the main water supply to the area.
Residents in the area can expect to have no water during this period.
What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions
The City says careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.
However, maintenance work can sometimes be more complex than anticipated, resulting in longer-than-expected periods of water supply disruptions.
Additionally, all sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.
The City advises that for a short period after the water supply is restored, the water may be discoloured or milky in appearance due to the presence of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand, the water will become clear in colour again.
How to prepare
Residents are encouraged to keep taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage, as well as store enough water in clean, sealed containers to last during this period.
