A Philippi farm fire has sent thick smoke over nearby homes since Sunday, leaving residents concerned and prompting safety advice from local officials, reports Cape {town} Etc.
‘The fire on Mr. Mongie’s farm in Olieboom Road Philippi is still raging,’ councillor Cllr Elton Jansen wrote in an official update on 10 March 2026, describing a complex operation where flames burn underneath large volumes of mulch that must be removed with diggers and front-end loaders for firefighters to reach the source.
‘This fire will continue for a couple of days,’ the statement added.
Fire and Rescue teams and the farm owner are working through the night to damp down hot spots, and Fire Services have ordered two helicopters to fetch water from Zeekoevlei to assist aerial efforts.
Residents who experience acute smoke problems should contact emergency services on 021 480 7700.
Local growers and neighbours have rallied to support frontline crews where it is safe to do so, while officials prepare a formal City media release with further operational details. The update closed with a plea for calm and cooperation as teams work to extinguish remaining hot spots.
