It’s finally happened. The predictions were right, petrol prices are officially going down for the month of August.

For the first time in a long time in Cape Town, Tuesday night may not see its usual overcrowding at petrol stations as motorists scramble for every last drop of ‘still-too-expensive-but-at-least-not-as-expensive-as-tomorrow’ fuel.
According to Top Auto, inland petrol prices are coming down by a maximum of R1.32 per litre, whereas diesel prices are dropping by up to 99 cents per litre.
The pricing adjustments will be hitting petrol stations from Wednesday 3 August, so maybe petrol stations can breathe a sigh of relief the night before as they brace themselves for the miraculous decrease.
The government’s 75c per litre tax relief officially ended with the start of the month which makes the reduction numbers appear slightly less appetizing but it’s appetizing nonetheless.
Here is the official decreases including the General Fuel Levy, as per Business Tech:
Petrol 95 | Decrease of 132 cents per litre |
Petrol 93 | Decrease of 132 cents per litre |
Diesel 0.05% | Decrease of 88 cents per litre |
Diesel 0.005% | Decrease of 91 cents per litre |
Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale) | Decrease of 144 cents per litre |
Here are what the prices at the pump will be for this month, as per Top Auto:
Fuel type | Inland | Coastal |
---|---|---|
Petrol 93 | R24.99 | R24.34 |
Petrol 95 | R25.42 | R24.77 |
Diesel 0.05% | R24.52 | R23.87 |
Diesel 0.005% | R24.62 | R23.98 |
Illuminating Paraffin | R18.42 | R17.63 |
Hopefully, this won’t be a one-month miracle and Tuesday night fill-ups can finally catch a small break.
