A lot of images circulating the media recently, have shown us the aftermath of the chaos brought forth by the unrest in our country. People asked, “where to now?” and the answer was for the most part, “a path of rebuilding.”
But what does rebuilding look like?
Here are some visuals that encapsulate the spirit of togetherness many South Africans have showcased in community upliftment efforts.
Rebuilding is every extra loaf of bread given, every message of kindness, every glass shard removed and rubbish bag thrown out. It’s replenishing what was lost, both in a tangible sense and in what we can’t see too. It’s the flowers of community that bloomed in the darkness.
1. The Howick cleanup
“Two days after the air around Howick (South Africa) was filled with smoke and the sounds of gunfire, the community came together to clean up the ransacked CBD… and from the dust and the litter and the trash there rose, hesitantly at first, a sense of solidarity, commitment and compassion,” writes photographer Narina Exelby.
