Three men were swept out to sea and drowned on Sunday during a baptism ceremony at Monwabisi Beach.

Vaughn Seconds, NSRI Strandfontein Station Commander said, at 8am NSRI Strandfontein duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning at Monwabisi.

“On arrival on the scene we found one adult male was out of the water and confirmed to be deceased and other adult males remained missing in the surf. It appears that the three men may have been swept out to sea by rip currents during a baptism ceremony in the surf,” said Seconds

During an extensive sea and shoreline search the police dive unit located and recovered two bodies. One body is still missing.

Police are investigating the incident.
