Tiger Brands has closed a third factory amid the listeriosis outbreak in South Africa and also recalled their ready-to-eat SNAX products.
‘Very low levels’ of listeria were found in products at the company’s Value Added Meat Product (VAMP) factory in Pretoria. Although the levels detected are well within the government standards for the presence of listeria, Tiger Brands has stated that the precautionary measure of closing down the factory has been taken.
They have also issued a countrywide recall of the SNAX product range because they produce the goods at the same Pretoria factory.
In another move to lessen the spread of the bacteria, Tiger Brands has begun winding down production at its Clayville abattoir, production will completely shut down by the end of March. The abattoir was the primary meat supplier for their Polokwane, Germiston and Pretoria factories implicated in the outbreak.
Tiger Brands has also said all their time and energy will go into understanding how the listeria bacterium ST6 infiltrated the VAMP facility.
On 15 March, the company confirmed in a statement that it had conducted independent testing, which confirmed the presence of the ST6 listeria strain in its Polokwane facility. This was confirmed by the National Department of Health on 8 March, after environmental swabs were collected from the factory on 2 March.
“We acknowledge and recognise that we are dealing with a national crisis which has impacted customers, consumers and the industry. Tiger Brands wants to be at the forefront of finding a solution,” Tiger Brands CEO, Lawrence MacDougall, said.
The suspension in production at its Polokwane, Germiston, Pretoria and Clayville sites has resulted in a loss of R337-million – R377-million thus far.
Tiger Brands, however, is not the only company to announce a national recall.
