Hollywood has lost one of its most distinctive performers, with Tim Curry, the actor behind some of the most memorable characters in film and television, dying at the age of 80.
Curry, whose career stretched across five decades, died at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday, according to BBC. His longtime manager and friend Marcia Hurwitz said he died peacefully. A cause of death has not been disclosed.
Curry had faced significant health challenges for more than a decade following a stroke, but continued working and remained a beloved figure among fans and fellow performers.
For many fans, Curry will forever be associated with Dr Frank-N-Furter, the outrageous character he brought to life in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The 1975 cult classic turned Curry into an international star and gave him a role that would remain closely tied to his legacy for the rest of his life. He had originally played the character on stage before reprising it for the movie.
But Frank-N-Furter was only one part of an extraordinarily varied career.
Curry also terrified a generation of viewers as Pennywise the Clown in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It. He appeared in films including Clue, Annie, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, The Hunt for Red October, Muppet Treasure Island, Addams Family Reunion and Scary Movie 2.
His work extended well beyond the screen, with a successful stage career and extensive voice-acting work.
Curry earned three Tony Award nominations, including recognition for his performances in Amadeus, My Favorite Year and Spamalot. He also received an Emmy nomination and won a Daytime Emmy for his voice work.
Even after his stroke affected his mobility, Curry continued to work, increasingly focusing on voice roles. His final years did not erase his connection to the industry or the characters that made him famous.
Earlier this year, Curry made a rare public appearance at a North Hollywood pub shortly after his 80th birthday.
His death closes a remarkable chapter in entertainment, but the characters Curry created, particularly Frank-N-Furter and Pennywise, remain firmly embedded in popular culture.
