The toad had unwittingly travelled from Franschhoek to Table View, tucked away inside someone’s backpack.
The individual who discovered the toad reached out to UrbanWild Conservation, asking whether it would be safe to release the amphibian into Rietvlei Nature Reserve.
Before any action was taken, the rehabilitation team consulted CapeNature for expert guidance.
Within just three hours, CapeNature, in partnership with the City of Cape Town’s Biodiversity Management Branch, organised the safe transport of the little toad back to its native habitat in Franschhoek.
UrbanWild Conservation emphasised the importance of not releasing wildlife into unfamiliar environments, as doing so can disrupt local ecosystems and potentially introduce harmful diseases.
Amphibians are particularly vulnerable to ecological changes and diseases like chytrid fungus, which can have devastating effects on their populations.
Thanks to the quick response from all involved, the Raucous toad is now back where it belongs – safe in its natural habitat.
