Tensions in the Middle East escalated further after Israeli forces launched an airstrike in southern Iran targeting a senior figure within the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.
According to Israeli officials, the strike was aimed at Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of the Guards’ naval division, who was reportedly inside an apartment hideout alongside other officers when the attack took place, though his condition remains unclear.
Tangsiri has been a central figure in Iran’s naval operations, particularly in actions linked to restricting movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global route for oil and gas shipments, as reported by the New York Times.
He has also been associated with the development and testing of drones and cruise missiles, and had recently been vocal on social media regarding Iran’s control of the strait and military activities carried out by the naval force.
The strike comes at a time when hopes of diplomatic progress appear uncertain, with little indication that the United States and Iran are nearing negotiations after weeks of ongoing conflict.
Israel confirmed additional strikes targeting locations including Isfahan, while also reporting incoming missiles launched from Iran, with at least one reaching its target.
Iran, in turn, intensified its response by launching attacks across the region, including strikes aimed at a U.S. military base in Kuwait and another facility in Saudi Arabia used by American forces, though the extent of any damage remains unknown.
In the United Arab Emirates, air defence systems were activated to intercept incoming threats, but falling debris from those interceptions resulted in two fatalities in Abu Dhabi.
Mixed messaging continues to surround the possibility of peace talks, with President Donald Trump suggesting Iran may be open to negotiations, while military movements — including the deployment of thousands of additional U.S. troops to the region — indicate preparations for a prolonged conflict.
Iran has privately signalled some openness to dialogue, but publicly maintains that any resolution will happen strictly on its own terms.
Meanwhile, Israeli leadership has reportedly instructed its military to intensify operations against Iran’s weapons infrastructure, reflecting concerns that the conflict could be brought to a premature end before key objectives are met.
