A total of 9 people were injured in Thursday’s explosion at Garden Shopping Centre. Fire and rescue services responded to a call for assistance at the popular centre at 3pm where a gas explosion had occurred. At the time, 5 people were reportedly hurt but officials put the injury count at nine later.

Those who sustained injuries were immediately attended to and taken to nearby medical centres for burn treatments.

Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, told News24 that two adults were seriously injured in the blast with seven others sustaining burn wounds as a result of the explosion. The gas blast happened at Pulp Kitchen restaurant, which remained closed today.

The centre was evacuated because of the fire and but fire services managed to get everything back to normal shortly afterwards. Gardens Shopping Centre is open and operating as normal today.
