Flanigan’s life came to an unexpected end on Saturday morning after an incident occurred while he was kayaking offshore from On-the-Rocks.
Flanigan, known for his spirited personality and dedication to ocean sports, made headlines just weeks prior by completing the arduous Robben Island to Blouberg crossing, setting a record as the oldest person to accomplish this extraordinary feat, as ratified by the Cape Long Distance Swim Association.
His achievement symbolised not only personal resilience but also inspired countless others in the community.
On Saturday morning, Flanigan was seen kayaking in the waters off Blouberg Beach when he inexplicably became unresponsive.
Eyewitnesses quickly alerted the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) at 07h45, reporting a capsized sea-kayak in the vicinity.
NSRI Melkbosstrand station commander Rowan Marais reported that coast watchers, medics, and emergency services mobilised swiftly to assist. ‘We received eyewitness accounts about an unmanned sea-kayak and immediately dispatched a rescue team,’ Marais explained.
Upon arrival, a group of swimmers informed the rescuers that Flanigan was being attended to by a Good Samaritan on a stand-up paddleboard, who had bravely stepped in to help.
Despite rapid CPR efforts from NSRI rescue swimmers and paramedics, all attempts to revive Flanigan were unfortunately exhausted, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His beloved community was left devastated by the news of his passing.
Marais highlighted the collective efforts of those who tried to save Flanigan, stating, ‘The swift actions of the SUP paddle boarder and other swimmers in assisting John prior to our arrival were commendable,’
He acknowledged the diligent work of the NSRI medics and paramedics, who fought valiantly to resuscitate him.
As details of the circumstances surrounding Flanigan’s death are still being investigated, the local police have opened an inquest docket.
As the community processes this loss, many remember Flanigan not just for his athletic prowess but also for the boundless enthusiasm he brought to every venture he undertook.
His family has requested privacy as they grieve, and the outpouring of condolences reflects the profound impact Flanigan had on those around him. ‘John will be dearly missed by family, friends, the local community, NSRI, and lifeguards,’ added Marais.
