The motorist accused of causing a fatal collision that claimed the life of a cyclist in Camps Bay has been formally identified following his first court appearance in Cape Town, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The 27-year-old driver, Bongani Mthethwa, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the death of 41-year-old cyclist Idries Sheriff. Sheriff was killed during an early-morning crash along Victoria Road on Tuesday.
Details shared via the WAAR Brandit INNI KAAP Facebook page indicate that Mthethwa was driving a BMW at the time of the incident. He faces multiple charges, including culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, and driving under the influence.
The court granted Mthethwa bail set at R15 000. Proceedings were postponed to 22 April 2026, allowing further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash to continue.
The case has drawn attention from the cycling community, with the Pedal Power Association (PPA) confirming that it has appointed an attorney to observe the legal process.
The organisation has not commented on the merits of the case but indicated that it is monitoring developments closely.
As investigations continue, the matter remains before the court, with further details expected to emerge ahead of the next appearance.

A devastating collision in Camps Bay has spotlighted the urgent need for accountability on South African roads, as a motorist accused of killing a cyclist was released on bail after appearing in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The 27-year-old man is facing serious charges of culpable homicide, reckless driving, and driving under the influence, following the tragic death of 41-year-old Idries Sheriff, a dedicated father and husband.
Idries was killed on Tuesday while riding along Victoria Road, a popular route for cyclists. Tragically, he was struck head-on after a high-performance vehicle, allegedly driven by the accused at high speed and under the influence, lost control, veered into the oncoming lane, and mounted the pavement.
The accused was arrested shortly after the incident, yet his release on R15,000 bail on Wednesday has ignited outrage among the cycling community and beyond.
Many expressed their frustration outside the court, where fellow cyclists gathered in solidarity with Idries Sheriff, demanding justice and accountability from motorists.
Among those voicing their displeasure was Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, who took to social media, thanking the cyclists and the Pedal Power Association for standing up with Idries’ family, and calling for swift justice and a denial of bail.
A 41-year-old cyclist has tragically lost their life after being struck by a vehicle on Victoria Road, near Glen Beach, in Camps Bay early Tuesday morning, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after the incident occurred at approximately 7am, where medical personnel declared the cyclist deceased on arrival.
According to Ward 54 Councillor Nicola Jowell, the accident also resulted in injuries to a second individual, who has since been transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Authorities have stated that Victoria Road will remain closed between Strathmore and Argyle Road for several hours as forensic investigators and the South African Police Service (SAPS) accident reconstruction teams examine the scene.
‘We advise motorists to use alternative routes and anticipate delays in the area,’ Jowell remarked. ‘Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the individual who has lost their life in this tragic incident,’
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that the accident involved a BMW vehicle that collided with the cyclist.
In the aftermath, a 27-year-old male driver was arrested and is set to appear before the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 17 December 2025, facing charges of culpable homicide.
Sergeant Twigg further urged anyone with information relevant to the incident to come forward, highlighting the importance of community assistance in such investigations.
