A devastating collision occurred on the R101 at Du Toitskloof Pass on Tuesday, leading to the tragic loss of three lives, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The incident transpired shortly before noon, around 11:30 am, and has since prompted an extensive response from emergency services and law enforcement.
According to a statement from the Drakenstein Municipality, three individuals tragically lost their lives in a crash involving three heavy motor vehicles and a light delivery vehicle.
The details surrounding the cause of the accident remain under investigation by local authorities, as they work meticulously to ascertain the events leading up to the fatal collision.
Chief Director of Traffic Management for Western Cape Mobility, Maxine Bezuidenhout confirmed the grim statistics, stating, ‘Reports indicate that three fatalities have been confirmed,’
Emergency crews worked diligently at the scene to conduct rescue and recovery operations, and the R101 was subsequently closed to all traffic as part of an effort to manage the situation.
Authorities have urged motorists in the vicinity to seek alternative routes to mitigate delays. Recommended detours include the N1 through the Huguenot Tunnel, the N2 via Sir Lowry’s Pass, or the R46 via Nuwekloof Pass.
Bezuidenhout further stressed the importance of total compliance: ‘We urge all road users to be patient, follow the directions of officials on site, and exercise extreme caution in the area,’ she stated.
After hours of recovery efforts, a significant update arrived late in the evening. Western Cape Mobility announced that the scene was cleared at approximately 9 pm, allowing the R101 to reopen in both directions.
The Drakenstein Municipality has openly expressed its deepest sympathies to the grieving families, acknowledging the profound loss that has struck the region.
