The Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha faced a major blow to its facilities when a drunken driver reportedly lost control of a truck and smashed into the clinic’s operating theatre on the evening of Tuesday, reports Cape {town} Etc.
This incident follows another crash just the day before, when a vehicle careened into the animal care facility’s fence.
With the entire operating theatre in ruins, the clinic is now grappling with the urgent and costly need to rebuild.
In addition to the destruction of the surgical area, the storage room was similarly devastated, presenting a significant challenge for the dedicated team who strive to provide vital services to the community’s animals.
‘This is damage of an enormous scale damage we could never have budgeted or prepared for,’ said Marcelle du Plessis, the Fundraising and Communications Executive of the clinic.
Despite the heart-wrenching destruction, du Plessis expressed gratitude that no animals or staff were harmed during the incident. ‘We are devastated, but we are also thankful that everyone is safe.’
The aftermath of the accidents has put a severe strain on the clinic’s operations. The committed staff members have pledged to continue providing the best possible care to animals despite facing challenges in efficiency and resources. Their resilience is evident, but so is the urgency for support.

In response to the devastation, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic has initiated an emergency fundraising appeal aimed at rebuilding the operating theatre and restoring full functionality to the clinic.
