One person was killed when two trains collided near the Horizon View train station in Roodepoort. The Premier Classe train departed from Cape Town and hit a stationary goods train at 9.35pm on Wednesday, February 12.

The Premier Classe train carried 36 passengers and 14 staff members, with five passengers getting off in Kimberley before the crash.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said that an elderly man and woman were trapped in a carriage of the passenger train. The man sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on the scene.

Rescue teams worked for more than two hours to free the trapped woman, who was airlifted to Milpark Hospital after she was freed. She is now in critical condition.

The other injured passengers were transported to a medical facility in Krugersdorp. Those who were unscathed were provided with alternative transport.

The incident has affected Metrorail Services along the Randfontein and Johannesburg lines, and commuters are advised to make use of alternative transport.
